The good Shepherd

The Good Shepherd

One of the most comforting images in all of Scripture is that of Jesus as our Good Shepherd. In Psalm 23, David declares, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Centuries later, Jesus identifies Himself as the fulfilment of that very promise: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11).
A shepherd knows every sheep by name. He leads them, feeds them, protects them, and searches for them when they wander. Jesus does not care for His people from a distance. He knows each of His children personally and calls them to follow Him. His sheep recognise His voice because they belong to Him.
What makes Jesus the Good Shepherd is not only that He leads His flock, but that He lays down His life for them. Unlike the hired hand who abandons the sheep when danger comes, Christ stood in our place. At the cross He faced the wolf of sin, Satan, and death, so that His sheep might have eternal life. His resurrection assures us that the Shepherd who died for His flock now lives forever to keep them.
Psalm 23 reminds us that life with the Shepherd is not free from dark valleys. There are seasons of suffering, uncertainty, and grief. Yet David does not fear because the Shepherd is present: “You are with me.” The Christian’s confidence is not that the valley is easy, but that Christ walks through it with us.
Today, listen for the Shepherd’s voice in His Word. Trust His leading even when you cannot see the path ahead. Rest in His care, knowing that no one can snatch His sheep out of His hand (John 10:28). The Shepherd who gave His life for you will never leave you nor forsake you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being my Good Shepherd. Thank You for laying down Your life to save me and for faithfully leading me each day. Help me to recognise Your voice, trust Your guidance, and follow You with a willing heart. When I walk through difficult seasons, remind me that You are with me and that nothing can separate me from Your love. Amen.
