Why Are We Comfortable in Sin?

By Ntlahla Ā· October 19, 2026

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Why are we so comfortable picking and choosing which parts of the Bible we want to obey? We love the verses that tell us God has a purpose for our lives. We love “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”We hold on to His promises, His love, His blessings, and the assurance that when we seek Him, we will find Him. But what happens when His Word confronts us? What about sex before marriage, sexual immorality, pornography, gossiping, lying, pride, ego, impatience, and anger? What about the music we listen to and the things we allow to influence our hearts? What about lacking the fruits of the Spirit but excusing ourselves by saying, “This is just who I am. This is how I am, and I will not change”? Since when did our personalities become an excuse for disobedience? Why do we want God to strengthen us in pursuing our dreams, but struggle to believe He can strengthen us to overcome our flesh? Why do we embrace His promises but resist His instructions? There is a difference between struggling with sin and becoming comfortable in it. Struggling means acknowledging that something needs to change, repenting, seeking God's help, and continuing to pursue obedience, even when we fall. Being comfortable in sin means knowing what God asks of us but deliberately choosing our desires over His instructions. This does not mean we will become perfect overnight. God's grace meets us in our struggles, and we should never condemn ourselves or others for fighting battles that are difficult to overcome. But we must be careful not to use grace as an excuse to remain unchanged. Matthew 6:24 reminds us that we cannot serve two masters. We cannot claim to surrender our lives to Christ while deciding that certain parts of His Word are optional whenever they make us uncomfortable. Following Jesus is not about choosing the scriptures that make us feel good and ignoring the ones that require us to change. It is about allowing Him to transform our hearts, our habits, our attitudes, and our behaviour.
